This position is a fixed term contract for three years.

“Synthetic Molecules Technical Development” (PTDC) brings a broad range of experience across drug substance (DS), drug product (DP), analytical sciences and manufacturing S&T, and collaborates closely with key partners in the departments Research and Early Development (pRED / gRED), Small Molecules (PTC) and PTD. PTDC is responsible for late stage technical development of our small molecules pipeline, manufacture of DS and DP for clinical studies and Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) across our small molecules manufacturing network.


Within “Synthetic Molecules Technical Development” our Process Analytical Technology (PAT) section is responsible for the implementation of PAT tools to support drug substance and drug product development, scale-up and clinical supply. Roche/Genentech PTD is currently implementing continuous drug substance and drug product manufacturing, where online-analytical methods play a vital role for process monitoring and control.


Good team working skills, a “can do” attitude, a strong customer focus and close collaboration with our internal partners (DS/DP development, clinical manufacturing, analytical development, quality and regulatory functions) is key to our success.


As a PAT Expert, you will contribute to the development, validation and implementation of state-of-the-art PAT methods in R&D, clinical and commercial manufacturing. These PAT solutions can be used for different purpose: to enable process monitoring, to use PAT for process control for batch and continuous manufacturing processes and for product release (e.g. real-time-release testing). You will report to the Head of Process Analytical Technology.


Main responsibilities are:

  • You will develop, optimize and validate PAT methods incl chemometric models (with support from senior PAT experts)

  • Hands-on setup of PAT tools in lab and production environment and running experiments in the team or independently

  • You will evaluate and implement new analytical technologies

  • You will participate in cross-functional teams

  • Writing of technical reports, method validation reports and regulatory documents


Your Profile


As the ideal candidate, you will hold a PhD or MSc in Natural Science or Engineering and will bring the following skills:

  • Expertise in spectroscopy (e.g. NIR, Raman) and analytical techniques for on-line process monitoring (e.g. NMR)

  • Knowledge/Expertise on the GMP guidelines is of advantage

  • Ideally 1-3 years professional experience in Industry or Academia

  • Modeling skills (e.g. chemometric modeling) and/or experience with multivariate data analysis

  • Additional skills or experience in the following areas are a plus:

  • Matlab/Python/R/C++ programming skills

  • Data science

  • Digitalization

  • Process automation

  • Continuous manufacturing

  • Oligonucleotide

  • High level of motivation and ability to implement pragmatic solutions

  • Good team working skills and a “can do” attitude

  • Excellent communication skills in English and /or German (ideally both)
